How can all people participate fully in the process of medical care? What is the continuum between patients, providers and community?

This workshop and discussion will centre around the politics of providers and the problems surrounding the regularization of medicine and the medicalization of bodies.

The workshop aims to re-imagine access to abortion as self-defined and self-provided; as a medical option to be made on the individual level in the community context, not manipulated to maintain power and hierarchy.

We’ll begin by highlighting the ways in which the criminalization of abortion served to legitimate institutionalized regulated medical practice while simultaneously delegitimating independent women-run clinics, as well as the ways in which providers and patients united to decriminalize abortion 100 years later. This will be followed by a strategy session, where we will continue to develop a plan of action for today.

Let’s be visionary, not reactionary! Autonomy and access means full participation on every level, it means eliminating hierarchy between providers and patients, it means placing no one above another. It is time to unite the providers, the people and the patients!

This workshop is part of the reproductive autonomy campaign, which articulates reproductive freedom as a radical politic based in solidarity with other social justice movements through action, literature, and popular education.
