What is safer sex?
The Centre for Gender Advocacy (the Centre) operates within a sex-positive framework. We organize workshops on topics related to sexuality (practices, identities and communication) so that everyone can all feel more comfortable and engaged in their sexual lives.
Safer sex is all parts of this process – getting to know your body, how to talk about it, how to talk about what you’re comfortable with or not, how to reduce risks when engaging in sexual practices, and how to make sex pleasurable! It also means informing yourself, getting tested, and knowing where to get the resources you need to engage in safer sex.
The Centre provides Safer Sex Kits available free to all. The kits include condoms, lubricant, gloves and tips. Each packet details the size and makeup of the materials in them. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Come by and pick them up!
Getting tested! Part of practicing safer sex is getting tested, and being able to talk to you partner(s) about getting tested too. The Centre has lots of information sheets that can direct you to the places most appropriate for you and your needs. There are also a few places around the city where you can get STI and HIV tested for free.
The youth, queer and trans-friendly health clinic at Head & Hands, located in NDG, is one such place. They also provide various contraceptives.
If you have any questions about sexual health, you can text them anonymously to SextEd at 514 700-4411 to get an answer within 24 hours. SextEd is a program of AIDS Community Care Montreal (ACCM). If you’re looking for information about HIV and treatment, you can also call ACCM’s confidential phone line at 514-527-0928. ACCM also facilitates Safer Sex, Safer Body Art and HIV 101 workshops for school and community groups through their Education & Prevention program. Visit their website for more details.
